Press Release

Steven Kasher Gallery is pleased to participate in Paris Photo 2017. We will present a curated booth titled Black in America: Four Photographers of the 1960s and Beyond. It is a powerful presentation and one of great urgency during this political climate. Visit us in Booth D13.

Our booth features the work of three founding members of the Kamoinge Workshop, the seminal African-American photography collective. Louis Draper, Shawn Walker and Ming Smith sought to achieve social change not through direct political action but by using photography as a means of shifting the perception and understanding of the Black experience. Our booth presents their finest and earliest vintage prints from the 1960s and 70s, many exhibited here for the first time.

At this moment, interest in these photographers is at an all-time high. In the past two years, we have placed their work in over 20 museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Nelson-Atkins Museum, Baltimore Museum of Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Museum. Between 2016 and 2019, the work of Louis Draper, Ming Smith and Shawn Walker will be exhibited at over 15 institutions internationally including the Whitney Museum of American Art; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; Cleveland Museum of Art; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Tate Modern; Crystal Bridges Museum of Art; Detroit Institute of Arts; Institute of Contemporary Art Boston and Serpentine Gallery.

The booth also features Stephen Shames’ black and white photographs of the Black Panther Party, one of the most creative and influential responses to racism and economic inequality in American history. Shames, who was white and Jewish, was adopted by the Panthers in their earliest years as their unofficial “official” photographer and documented this dynamic organization from 1967 to 1973.  His close friendship with founder Bobby Seale gave Shames unprecedented access to the unscripted behind-the-scenes moments that provide a unique view of this highly controversial group. In 2017, the exhibition Stephen Shames: Une Retrospective is traveling to four French institutions including the Musée Nicéphore-Niépce, Chalon-sur-Saône; Le Centre Culturel Valery-Larbaud, Vichy; and Maison de la photographie Robert Doisneau, Gentilly.
