Biography

Ashkan Honarvar (b. 1980)

Ashkan Honarvar’s art deals with the darker sides of the human mind through the undeniable and unavoidable beauty of the human body. The universal human body, used as tool for seeking identity, is the focal point of his work. By dissecting and rearranging images with careful aesthetic vision, Honarvar creates work with an intriguing macabre darkness.

In his series ‘Faces’, Honarvar challenges the viewer to consider the physical and psychological wounds brought on by war. Using existing pictures of young soldiers from the first World War, Honarvar paints over the images with fierce strokes and graceful lines, highlighting the physical sufferings.

His series of sketches, titled ‘Lines’ delves into the subconscious distortion of the human body. His collage series called ‘Finding Hitler’ consists of images of wounded bodies expertly combined with images of innocence, such as newborn babies and flowers. With these collages Honarvar searches for the universal symbol of evil.

The art of Ashkan Honarvar is a paradox. On one hand there is the severity of the subject: a shocking image; and on the other hand there is a macabre beauty in his work. With a pen like a scalpel and creativity as his tool Honarvar gives a beautiful view of the darker sides of humanity.
